Virginia McKinney

3D Mixed Media

Virginia McKinney creates distinctive dwelling-inspired sculptural forms from steel and clay. She first makes the clay form out of red, brown and white earthenware and subtly colors it with velvety ceramic stains and underglazes before firing it, then hand-forges and welds the steel supports they sit on - matching the clay piece’s personality with its own unique stand.

Originally from Upstate New York, Virginia is the Ceramics teacher at Tigard High School and runs Folded Crow Studio. She previously held the post of Assistant Professor, teaching Ceramics and Sculpture at Bethany College in Kansas and was an Artist in Residence and Interim Ceramics Head at the Armory Art Center in Florida, as well as an adjunct instructor of Ceramics and 3-D design at Walters State Community College in Tennessee. She exhibits her work nationally at high-caliber fine craft shows and sells her work though several galleries and museum shops. Virginia’s work is also in numerous private collections.
