Stacy Hsu

Stacy Hsu is a Seattle-based botanical and wildlife illustrator working at the intersection of ecology, storytelling, and place. She holds a Certificate in Scientific Illustration from the University of Washington and a Master of Architecture from the University of Oregon. She spent over 15 years in design before fully committing to illustration. Her practice grows from time spent in the field backpacking, kayaking, and researching ecosystems of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. That direct encounter with the natural world shapes every subject she draws. Her work has appeared in nature publishing, environmental nonprofit campaigns, and large-scale public murals. She is particularly drawn to projects that deepen people's connection to the living landscapes around them.
Stacy’s work begins by hand with graphite on paper that is then scanned and colored digitally. Occasionally, embroidery thread enters the piece, stitching through the surface to add tactile depth to the drawn image. The process is rooted in time spent in the wilderness: backpacking, kayaking, and studying the ecosystems that Stacy has moved through. Stacy’s field sketches and research inform each subject, so the work carries both the feel of direct observation and the quiet of wild places.
