Marina Richie is an award-winning nature writer with a passion for birds and wild places. Set in the Cascadia bioregion, her 2026 book Feathered Forest: Aloft With Birds in Ancient Trees, entwines the lives of birds with a hidden vertical world. Through eloquent and atmospheric prose, the reader is led on a journey through the layers of the old-growth forests and giant trees of the Pacific Northwest and introduced to the elusive birds who depend on these threatened ecosystems. Her fascinating book, Halcyon Journey: In Search of the Belted Kingfisher, received the 2024 John Burroughs Medal for distinguished natural history writing, among other awards. Through prose and poetry, Marina seeks to bridge the divide separating people from nature. Her essays, blogs and poems appear in popular and literary publications. Marina has a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Montana and an undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Oregon. Marina lives in Bend.
