Maria Mudd Ruth is the author of more than a dozen books on natural history topics for general audiences, young readers and birders alike. Her most recent book, The Bird With Flaming Red Feet: Seasons With An Uncommonly Common Seabird, is a lively and heartfelt natural history of the Pigeon Guillemot, a charismatic seabird found around the North Pacific and from Alaska to Southern California. This talkative and often-overlooked bird plays an outsized role in the health of the marine ecosystem and has earned status as an “indicator species,” especially in the Puget Sound. Other titles by Maria include the critically acclaimed Rare Bird: Pursuing the Mystery of the Marbled Murrelet, and award-winning A Sideways Look at Clouds. In addition, Maria’s work has appeared in publications produced by the National Geographic Society, where she worked as a researcher and editor for seven years. Maria lives in Olympia, Washington, and is a member of the South Sound Bird Alliance and volunteers as a community scientist with the Salish Sea Guillemot Network.
