Meet the Artist
Kyoko Niikuni
Fiber Arts - Decorative
Kyoko Niikuni is an independent artist in the Puget Sound area who specializes in creations using traditional Japanese Washi paper. The natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest has been her inspiration since 1980. Her art features Blue Herons, Hummingbirds, Northwest native plants and animals, as well as garden plants and Japanese Cranes. She strives to express the unique movement and features of each subject, using the delicate fibers of washi paper to work at a very detailed level.
Materials and tools used include: a collage technique painted with Washi paper. The technique consists of tearing and pasting down hundreds of teased pieces of hand-dyed washi paper. This blends together, creating a composition with a two-dimensional appeal that breathes life into the artwork, displaying color intensity, texture, and depth that cannot be achieved with watercolor.
