Kim Black is a pine needle basket maker and gourd artist. She strives to create high quality yet affordable art. She creates gourd vessels, gourd wall art and baskets inspired by indigenous cultures from around the world. All her designs are first wood burned and use archival inks to add color. She carves many of the gourds which adds a 3 dimensional aspect. Many of the gourds are embellished with rims woven from pine needles, philodendron, iris leaves or reed.

Kim has always enjoyed nature and the outdoors. She is an avid gardener and finds continual joy and wonder in nature's creations and processes. This, along with her long standing interest in indigenous art and culture, is where she draws inspiration for her work. She loves combining indigenous inspired images with such an ancient vessel as a gourd and adding fibers and embellishments. The unique characteristics of each gourd requires flexibility and adaptations of a design idea. This makes the creative process extremely fun and challenging.

Kim started 30+ years ago as a pine needle basket maker and teacher. Her venture into gourd art has allowed her to blend her love of basketry and indigenous cultures. Her work is currently being shown at the Vista House Gallery at Crown Point and The Museum of Natural History in Eugene, Oregon.
