Meet the Artist
Jennifer Foran
Woodworking
Jennifer Foran was born and raised in Pennsylvania before spontaneously moving to Portland, Oregon in 1999. Inspired by the beauty of the Pacific Northwest, she began creating landscapes on wood that combined her drawing and painting experience with her love of trees. Her artistic process begins with careful observation of wood grain patterns, determining which natural threads and paths will be exposed and woven into landscapes as water, sky, mountains, or wind. She views trees as anchors in her compositions—constant elements carefully situated like actors on a stage, while the grain represents change and movement.
Materials and tools used include: wood burning tools for drawing tree images onto surfaces, water-based wood stains for their translucent qualities that enhance natural grain, and acrylic paint finishing. Her work incorporates the natural elements of wood grain and knots, with details that wrap around the sides to reflect cycles and continuum.
