Meet the Artist
Ian Petersen
Digital Art
Ian Petersen’s lifelong love of maps and the outdoors began on family backpacking trips. His passion for the outdoors and science led him to pursue ecology, where he spent summers in the field, fascinated by the connection and isolation of landscapes. Using the same tools he was using for science, he began to create his own maps. Initially created as gifts to friends, it quickly grew, and he has pursued cartography full-time for the past 5 years. His work has been recognized with the Blue Ribbon Award at the Lake Oswego Festival of the Arts 2024 and Best New Artist at the Corvallis Fall Festival 2023.
Materials and tools used include: a blend of precise GIS mapping and digital drawing he calls “cARTography.” He creates maps of real places, digitally blending mapping tools and drawing to delineate borders, contours, and shading. His maps are not derived from existing maps and are printed as limited editions on canvas and paper.
