Fern Wexler

Families of a Feather: A Celebration of Family Diversity

Wild Arts Festival is pleased to host Fern Wexler, a young writer and wildlife photographer. A dedicated naturalist and avid birdwatcher, they have a passion for inspiring children to experience the diversity and beauty of nature. In Families of a Feather: A Celebration of Family Diversity, beautifully illustrated by Kelsey Buzzell, Fern explores different family structures and ways of caring for young in a variety of bird species. The engaging writing celebrates inclusion and reflects Fern’s background in education and interest in connecting with children. Families of a Feather includes a short field guide about the bird species included in the book. In addition to writing, Fern is the winner of the 2020 Audubon Youth Leadership Award and volunteers at the Bird Alliance of Oregon.  Fern lives in Portland, Oregon with six pet pigeons, and can usually be found outside, looking for inspiration through a pair of binoculars.
