Calvin Swan

Woodworking

Calvin Swan uses old world folk art methods, originated in Europe and brought to the USA by early day loggers. Recycled western red cedar fence posts are cut to length and split out into billets. He soaks the billets in water until they sink. Using a knife he shapes the bird, splits the feathers and fans out the wings using the fanning technique. Calvin clamps each feather, applies water to the sculpture and water soluble glue throughout the piece. To Calvin, birds are creatures of great beauty and spiritual in nature. His aim is to create a work of art which is a portrait of the bird’s spirit.

Calvin worked as a journeyman carpenter for 21 years and a carpentry teacher for many years. Calvin has enjoyed sharing his creations for the last 30 years.
